Part 4 · On the road

47. Little helpers#

Coming with version 1.4. The little helpers are finished and will ship with the next major update. Until then, the deworming treatment calculator is under More → Help.

Some things you want to work out or look up quickly without creating a trip: when does the dog need to see the vet if the ferry arrives in Dover on Friday at 2:00 PM? What are 40 pounds in euros? How long does the hike with 600 m of ascent take? How do you say “Is my dog allowed?” in Danish?

That’s what the Little helpers are for: on iPhone under More → Little helpers, on iPad in the sidebar. All four tools work without a trip and offline. If there is a current or upcoming trip, the currency converter and the phrasebook pre-select their choice to match it.

47.1 Deworming treatment calculator#

The deworming treatment calculator works out a country’s deworming window in both directions (Pets):

You can choose any country with a deworming requirement in your country records. The hours come from the country; without a setting of its own, 24 to 120 hours apply (Countries).

Time zones. The border crossing counts in the destination country’s time, the treatment where the vet gives it. Under Time zones you therefore find the Time zone at the border crossing — selectable for countries with several zones — and the Time zone of the deworming treatment, pre-set to your home time zone and switchable to a zone of the destination country. You enter each time in the zone where it applies; the result appears the same way, with a label such as “8:42 PM CEST (UTC+2)”.

Example: arrival in Dover on Friday at 2:00 PM (BST). The calculator gives the treatment window in your time at home: from Sunday 3:00 PM to Thursday 3:00 PM CEST.

For an actual trip, you plan the deworming treatment in the Entry checklist — there it is linked to your journeys and dates. The calculator is meant for trying things out.

47.2 Currency converter#

Enter an Amount and choose From and To; the Swap direction button reverses the conversion. The currency of the current or upcoming trip is pre-selected, converted into your base currency (All settings).

Currency converter: 100 pounds in euros with rate and date of the ECB rates
Currency converter: 100 pounds in euros with rate and date of the ECB rates

Below the result you see the rate (“1 GBP = 1.1765 EUR”). The converter uses the European Central Bank reference rates the app last loaded; if the ECB doesn’t list a currency, it takes the rate from the country records and says so. Etappe only fetches new rates when you tap Refresh Rates — never on its own (Budget).

47.3 Hiking calculator#

The hiking calculator estimates a hike’s walking time using the formula of the German Alpine Club (DAV) and the German hiking trail standard DIN 33466 — the same calculation Etappe shows for outdoor activities:

Hiking calculator: 12 km and 600 m of ascent give 4:42 h walking time, 5:53 h with breaks
Hiking calculator: 12 km and 600 m of ascent give 4:42 h walking time, 5:53 h with breaks

  1. Enter the Journey distance (km), Ascent and Descent (metres). If you leave the descent empty, it counts the same as the ascent — right for loop hikes.
  2. Optionally Set start time.
  3. Under Result you see the Walking time, the duration With breaks (+25%) and, with a start time, the Arrival around.

How the formula works is explained in How Etappe does the math. Weather, terrain and fitness are not included.

47.4 Phrasebook#

The phrasebook contains 155 phrases in 16 topics — from Basics, Directions and Car & breakdowns to Camping, Restaurant and Shopping, all the way to With a dog, Emergency and Numbers & time. It translates from the app’s language into one of 18 languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
