43. Glossary#

Etappe uses some words in a very specific sense: a “night” is something different from a trip day, a “block” something different from an entry. Each of these terms is explained here in brief, with a reference to its chapter.

A#

Alert. A notice about a deadline, in two levels: “Critical” and “Soon”. Alerts are recalculated every time you open them and disappear as soon as you fix the cause (Alerts).

Archive. Setting aside instead of deleting: archived people, pets and vehicles are kept, but are no longer offered in new selection lists. Archived trips disappear from the Trips list and can be reached again via the Archive filter (People, Creating a trip).

B#

Base currency. The currency you enter amounts in and read totals in — chosen in the Getting started assistant or under Settings → Currency, and the same on all your devices via iCloud. Internally, Etappe keeps calculating in euros; switching changes only the display and new entries, saved amounts keep their currency (Budget, How Etappe does the math).

Block. A row in the sketch — accommodation, journey, activity, outdoor activity or note — with a title, a duration and a position in the sequence, but no date (Sketch).

Booking receipt. An attachment on an accommodation, journey, activity or outdoor activity that is marked as a receipt. Only marked receipts can be attached to the itinerary PDF (Documents and receipts).

Border crossing. The moment you leave the EU, which you set by hand in the checklist. It is the reference point for the deworming treatment window; without it, the start of the trip applies (Entry checklist).

Budget item. An expense you record yourself, with a description, category, amount and currency — for everything that has no booking of its own (Budget).

C#

Checkpoint. A point in the entry checklist that you can check off. There are exactly three, all derived from the country data: Apply for ETA, Apply for visa, Deworming treatment (Entry checklist).

Considering. The first trip status: the destination appeals to you, nothing more is settled yet. The date never moves this status forward (Core concepts).

Create entry. The action that turns a sketch block into the real entry. The block stays put, with a green check mark (Sketch).

D#

DAV walking time. The walking time of an outdoor activity, calculated by the formula of the German Alpine Club (DAV, DIN 33466). It applies only to types on foot; for bike tours, the detail view shows the distance without a walking time (Outdoor activities).

Day boundary. A separate entry in the sketch that starts a new day. It alone determines how the days are divided — the duration of the blocks does not (Sketch).

Deworming treatment window. The permitted period for the deworming treatment before the border crossing, calculated from the country fields “Earliest” and “Latest”; if nothing is entered, 120 and 24 hours apply (How Etappe does the math).

ECB rates (rate table). The reference rates of the European Central Bank, which Etappe fetches from frankfurter.dev when you tap Refresh Rates or after a country import — never on its own. They lay over the exchange rates of all countries with a matching currency, supply the rate of the base currency and travel with you via iCloud; the line “Rates: ECB as of …” shows how current they are (Countries).

ETA. An electronic travel authorization. If a country requires one, a checkpoint is created; the alert only goes away once the document is on file (Countries).

Etappe. The name of the app. A single leg of the way you cover, by contrast, is called a journey in the app (Journeys).

EUR factor. The value of one unit of a foreign currency in euros, i.e. “1 GBP = ? EUR” — the rate field on budget items and research items, prefilled from the ECB rates or the country’s rate and frozen when you save. Without it, Etappe cannot convert an amount and does not count it toward the expenses. The reverse reading, “1 EUR = ? GBP”, is called the exchange rate on the country (Budget, Countries).

Exchange rate. The rate on a country in the reading direction “1 EUR = X” — for instance 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP. For currencies on the ECB list, the rate table sets it; otherwise you maintain it by hand, and the next country import overwrites it (Countries).

F#

Full version. The one-time unlock of all writing functions, with no subscription and no user account. It is tied to your Apple ID (Trial and full version).

G#

GPX. A widely used file format for waypoints and tracks. Etappe reads it when importing outdoor activities and routes, and writes it when you share a recording (Outdoor activities).

H#

Home country and home location. Two settings that are the same on all your devices via iCloud: the home country — selectable from all countries of the world — determines the perspective of the country data (embassies, travel advice), is left out as a flag on the small trip tiles and is shown in gold on the world map; the home location appears as a house on the maps (Home).

I#

ICS. The standard format for calendar files. “Events as calendar (.ics)” writes a trip’s events into one; the file is a snapshot, not a subscription (Exports and printouts).

ID document. A document on file — for people, say, a national ID card, passport, driver’s license, ETA or visa; for animals an EU pet passport, pet passport or vaccination record. If “Valid until” is missing and “Permanently valid” isn’t set either, the validity counts as unknown: the entry checklist reports orange, and the ETA/visa check treats it as not fulfilled (People, Entry checklist).

Item. The name for a single entry in a packing list or template, with a name, category and quantity (Packing list).

J#

Journey. Every movement within a trip with a start, a destination and a mode of transport: the ferry, the flight, the car leg between two accommodations (Journeys).

K#

Key-value store (iCloud). A small storage area in your Apple ID alongside the actual database. Etappe keeps the home country, home location, base currency and the ECB rate table there so that they are the same on all your devices; the last change wins, and without iCloud the values stay local (iCloud sync).

N#

NLT. The abbreviation in the to-do form for “not later than”, i.e. to be done by that date at the latest. What is saved is always a whole day, without a time of day (To-dos).

Note. The sketch block type for anything that has no shape yet — when you create the entry, it becomes a research item. Not to be confused with the notes field that almost every entry has (Sketch).

O#

Outdoor activities. The area for everything you cover under your own power — hike, mountain hike, via ferrata, bike tour — with distance, elevation gain and GPX track (Outdoor activities).

Overnight stay. The unit an accommodation is counted in: calendar days between the check-in day and the check-out day; times of day play no role. Friday to Monday is three nights, but four trip days (Core concepts).

Overview. The view across all trips: next trip, reminders, expiring documents, budget status lights (Overview).

P#

Packing list template. A packing list that spans trips and that you take over into a trip’s packing list with one tap. Items with the same category and the same name are not created twice (Packing list templates).

Participants. The people, pets and the vehicle of a trip, assigned under “Travel party”. Packing list assignments and deadline checks follow from them (Core concepts).

Q#

Quick action. A shortcut on the app icon: “Today” and “Journal entry”. Both need a trip with the status Under way (Quick actions).

R#

Rabies status. The status light for a pet’s rabies vaccination. It is green only if the vaccination was given before the start of the trip and is valid until the end of the trip (Pets).

Records. Data that doesn’t belong to any trip but is only assigned to one: countries, people, pets, vehicles, packing list templates (Core concepts).

Reminder. A dated event with a lead time that reports as a notification at 9:00 AM on the day “due date minus lead-time days”. To-dos never do that (Reminders).

Research item. A find for a trip with a link, place, costs and rating. “Turn into” makes it an activity, accommodation or journey (Research).

Route recording. The actual route of a journey, recorded as you go. If you apply it, it replaces the draft and supplies the kilometers and driving time (Recording a journey).

Sketch. A trip’s planning mode: a sequence of blocks without dates, from which real entries are created later (Sketch).

Status light. A rating in four colors — green, yellow, orange, red — for the remaining budget, the validity of documents and the rabies status (How Etappe does the math).

Status pill. The small colored label on cards and list rows that shows a state — trip status, booking status, validity (Finding your way around).

T#

Time zone offset. The time difference at a journey’s destination, in half-hour steps. You enter the arrival as local time; for the duration, Etappe factors the offset out (Journeys).

Today. A trip’s day screen with the day’s program items to check off. It always shows the actual current date, never a chosen trip day (Today).

Trial. The first 14 days from the first launch, during which everything can be used. After that, reading and exporting stay free (Trial and full version).

Trip day. The number of a day counted from the start date (“Day 3 of 12”); both boundary days count (How Etappe does the math).

Trip status. One of six states of a trip: Considering, Bucket list, Planning, Making arrangements, Under way, Past. From “Making arrangements” on, Etappe moves it forward by date (Core concepts).

Waypoint. An intermediate point in a journey’s route path. It bends the line on the map into the actual course (Journeys).
